Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who is this program designed for? A: The program is designed for families who have had interest in homeschooling but have been hesitant and unsure of where to begin. It may also cater to families who have tried homeschooling but have not found a program that has been successful with their children. Families who desire an alternative to the traditional school system and wish for a more individualized program that compliments their child's learning style may also be interested.
Q: How do I know if this style of learning is a good fit for my child? A: Ask yourself these questions: Does my child learn more with individual or small group lessons? Does my child learn through hands-on activities? Does my child enjoy interacting and learning with children of different ages? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, your child could find success with this style of learning. Even if your child does well in the traditional group learning environment, he or she could thrive independently in this community classroom.
Q: What is the expectation for parents? A: Parents play a key role in their child(ren)'s education at Second Plane Homeschool Collective. Parents are invited to volunteer in the classroom as their schedule allows, and they will act as guides at home with their child(ren) on home learning days. Optional meetings will offer training for parents to help them become familiar with different learning materials utilized in the community classroom.
Q: Where will the community classroom be located? A: For the time being, we are located in two classrooms at East Petersburg Mennonite Church. We also utilize the East Petersburg Civic Grounds Community Park daily. Q: Will parents have to teach a class in the community classroom? A: We are not a cooperative where parents are required to teach the classes. Instruction for small group and individual lessons will be delivered by a PA-certified elementary teacher who will be acting as the classroom guide and preparing the environment for the children to be independent with their learning. As students in the class gain mastery of different skills, they will be given opportunities to share their knowledge with their peers in the format of giving a lesson. As parents feel comfortable, they are encouraged to jump in and help out with pre-planned lessons.
Q: What is the tuition to be part of the collective? A: Second Plane Homeschool Collective is designed to be affordable for families. Our tuition encompasses access to high-quality hands-on learning materials in the community classroom, general learning supplies, and guidance from a PA-certified elementary teacher. Tuition rates also cover facility rental and insurance for the community classroom. Interested families should fill out the form on the contact page of this website.
Q: Do parents have to buy any learning materials for their home? A: Your child will either create a copy of the material for use at home or be given access to a virtual classroom created by Second Plane Homeschool Collective. We use Google as our method to share materials and printable copies of materials are also made available.
Q: Why are 3.5-6 year old (Children's House) and 6-12 year old (Elementary) children together in a community classroom? A: Multiage learning promotes leadership, peer teaching & learning. It creates a diverse environment and encourages a growth mindset. Older children work alongside younger children in a co-learning and motivating atmosphere.
